What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling, typically in the arms or legs, caused by a compromised lymphatic system. When the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, lymph fluid cannot drain properly, leading to uncomfortable swelling and potential complications.

Without proper treatment, lymphedema can progress and lead to recurring infections, decreased mobility, and reduced quality of life. Early intervention and consistent management are key to controlling symptoms and preventing progression.

Common Causes

  • Cancer treatment (surgery, radiation)
  • Lymph node removal
  • Infection or injury
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Hereditary conditions (primary lymphedema)

Lymphedema Treatment

Certified CDT Therapy

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

CDT is the gold standard treatment for lymphedema, consisting of four key components delivered by certified therapists.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

A specialized, gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to improve fluid drainage and reduce swelling.

Compression Bandaging

Multi-layer bandaging applied after MLD to maintain reduced limb volume and prevent fluid re-accumulation.

Therapeutic Exercise

Customized exercises performed while wearing compression to enhance lymphatic flow through muscle contractions.

Skin Care

Proper skin hygiene and care to prevent infections and maintain skin integrity in affected areas.

Treatment Phases

Phase 1: Intensive Treatment

The initial phase focuses on maximum volume reduction. Patients typically receive treatment 3-5 times per week for 2-4 weeks, depending on severity.

  • Daily Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Multi-layer compression bandaging
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Patient education

Phase 2: Maintenance

After achieving optimal reduction, patients transition to self-management with periodic follow-up visits to maintain results.

  • Custom compression garment fitting
  • Self-massage techniques
  • Home exercise program
  • Ongoing monitoring
